Got a nice meme from Marianne:
"The best songs of this autumn that can be either brand new or older. Post a list of the top 5 favorite songs of the moment, and then ask 5 other bloggers to do the same"
Hmm it's going to be tough to pick the songs. You see, I rely on my iTunes library really heavily. I add new songs daily/weekly, and listen to them in the order of what is newest. And due to some computer updates, I had to reinstall everything, and lost my "music history"... a lot of favourites have gone missing in action, lost among all the thousands of songs I have. So I'm slowly re-discovering my music, thanks to the Genius feature added to the latest iTunes version... But anyways, I'll pick top 5 of my favourites that I've found so far from my library.
Damien Rice - Slow
Last year in his concert Damien sang this little, touching song that I've been trying to find ever since then, with only the line "our dance is almost over" ringing in my head (and isn't that just the perfect line?). I finally succeeded and found it on YouTube (Where would I be without YouTube... my love for music videos is possibly even stronger than for just audio) My heart breaks every time I listen to it.
Bon Iver - Skinny Love
Heart breaking, heart touching song. And the live version in Jools Holland... when his voice breaks it makes my heart ache for him.
Oren Lavie - Her Morning Elegance
Another music blog or Grey's Anatomy discovery. Possibly both. Not sure what caught me first: the voice, the lyrics or the instruments in the background.
George Laswell - Sing, Theresa Says
This was a discovery from a music blog. I just love the "da di dum di dum di dum dum"...
Citizen Cope - Fame
I don't really remember how I came across this
song for the first time. Probably in one of the many music blogs I
frequently read... If you know my music taste, you wouldn't expect me
to like this song based on the first few notes. But the song and the
voice somehow caught my attention and made me fall in love with the song.
There are so many more than top 5 songs I wold have liked to post here. But I'll stop at these, because they are worth getting the spotlight to themselves. I tried adding songs with female singers to the list, honestly, I did. But it just wasn't meant to be...
I have loved music videos since I was very young, around 6 or 7 years old. We used to record them on video cassettes from the few music shows we got on TV those days (it took years for MTV to make it all the way to Finland). And I watched the videos over and over again.
I haven't gone through my music videos for ages, since I rarely watch videos anymore. I've been thinking about getting all of my video stuff burned on DVDs, but that's a huge project, and I am, well, really good starting projects but really bad at finishing them. So it can wait another day.
Luckily, there's always YouTube. And boy have I had fun looking around for my old favourites... There are some dark secrets in my musical past. What was it about the 80s that seems so ridiculous nowadays?
Here's 5 of my very favourites from the 80s. And before you judge, I was very very young :P
* Alphaville - Forever Young
* Bananarama - Help
* Limahl - Neverending Story
* Duran Duran - Wild Boys
* Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over
If there's one thing that defines me, it's music. Two, it's music and lyrics. Three, it's music, lyrics and lists. I think, read, speak, write about these things often, if not all the time. So in a way, it is amazing it took me this long to write about these things here. I could dedicate each of those three things a post of their own, but to spare us all, I'm just going to cover them all in one go.
Earlier this year I noticed I was stuck on listening to same music all the time, which is fine, but I love to discover new, interesting music. So I began to look around me more. I found lots of interesting music blogs that recommend and provide samples of music by bands unknown to me. I started to search and listen to new music via last.fm and Pandora, trying to find the limits to my music taste. I almost forgot to listen to my "old" music for a while. And I've made some pretty amazing discoveries that are now my new favorites, quickly becoming part of my all time favorites.
In some way, this makes me really happy. The fact that I'm still able to get to know new music and love it, too seems to be even more important to me than I thought. Why? That's a story for another time.
My love of lyrics is strong, I think I've replaced reading poetry with reading lyrics. There is such beauty and meaning in song lyrics at times that it amazes me. And when you combine that with right kind of voice and energy, how can you not love them?
Fascination with lists is a bit harder to explain. I guess since there's such mess and chaos in my thoughts, work etc. that I need one organized way to view the world. I enjoy both writing and reading lists, of almost anything and from anyone.
And to combine all these topics, here's a list of recent song finds I've loved, and my favorite lines of the lyrics from those songs:
- Kate Havnevik - I Don't Know You
And I, I've seen the waves
Inside your heart
Turning you upside down
- Final Fantasy - Many Lives -> 49 MP
I picture a man who lives in the past
He keeps a book of photographs
Of his younger self, clairvoyant self
- Anna Nalick - Breathe (2am)
There's a light at each end of this tunnel you shout cause you're just as far in as you'll ever be out
And these mistakes you've made
You'll just make them again if you'll only try turnin' around
- Clayhill - One Nerve
Yeah I
I see what you’re doing here
You’re breaking me down
One nerve at a time
- Trespassers William - Weakening
It doesn't hurt anymore
Love that is stubborn and becomes a part
Of who you are
You know i look for the wear
Signs of it fading, expecting it there
Tell me where
